35 NOVA TRAWLER
"raised pilot house trawler"

HISTORY

Nova Scotians have been building boats since they found fish in the ocean. What a place to start to find a solid and seaworthy vessel.

Tied up along side a commercial fishing dock in Meteghan, Nova Scotia, this 35 Nova Trawler feels right at home.

Commercial fishing boats built in Nova Scotia are typically one of two styles.

Cape Island Style (semi-displacement) which are full displacement mid ship forward and a planning hull from mid ship back. These are designed to carry a load through rough seas, usually with a proud bow to keep the water off the deck when steam into waves.

The Northumberland Strait Style (semi-displacement) which are narrow and long with piercing bows and flat bottoms on the stern. Designed for fishing conditions typical between the province of PEI and the mainland, higer HP and go fast.

And then there is the 35 combination hull design used exclusively for the building of the 35 Nova Trawler pleasure vessel. This hull offers the best of both designs, can carry a moderate load typical for pleasure use and offers a spunky performance with lower HP engines.

It all started in 1987 when North Shore Boats Ltd. contracted James D. Rosborough, a naval architect and founder of the Halifax based Rosborough Boats, to come up with a a new hull design. The result was the 35' COMBINATION BOAT. In 1988 North Shore Boats Ltd. built the hull and deck molds and started building boats. In time North Shore Boats moved up to building larger vessels and by 1994 the molds were sold to David McDonald Boats Ltd who continued to build. To date over 100 of these vessels have been built.

Today this hull mold is used exclusively to build 35 Nova Trawler pleasure vessels. A raised pilot house style offering an affordable alternative to cruising trawlers. Although it is designed for Nova Scotia waters, it would look great in The Bahamas.

We are a progressive boat yard with plans in the works to promote and build the 35T, 35L and 35C series of pleasure vessels.
