36 NOVA TRAWLER
"a raised pilot house coastal cruiser"
HISTORY
The 36 Nova Trawler is a pilothouse trawler using a Cape Island style hull.
In order to appreciate the Cape Island style boat one has to look back
to the fishing industry on Cape Sable Island located on the southern-most
tip of Nova Scotia. Since its founding back in 1760 when families emigrated
from Cape Cod, the economy of Sable Island has been based on the sea.
The fisherman has been and continues to be the mainstay of the Island's economy.
Fishermen need boats and Cape Sable fishermen need particularly tough
sturdy boats to handle the North Atlantic that lies just off their shore.
The boatbuilding industry that emerged to fill this need developed the
Cape Island Style hull. These boats achieved far greater stability and
carrying capacity then any of the others, enabling the fishermen to go
out more days of the year, go farther out, stay out in worse weather and
carry heavier loads of traps, gear and fish.
The Cape Island design has become highly valued for its reliability,
beauty of line, seaworthiness and stability as a fishing platform.
So successful has been the design, that some 80% of Nova Scotia's
commercial fishing fleet of under 65-feet are Cape Island Style boats.
It is also credited as the precursor of Nova Scotian and the forerunner
of what we now know as the Downeast "lobster boat".
The original hand-built boats with oak for the keel and hackmatack
and pine planks for the hull have continuously evolved as materials
and manufacturing technologies and techniques developed.
However, the fundamental Cape Island hull design has not changed.
Our 36 hull has a deep and full keel making it extremely seaworthy.
With its 15'8" beam it can carry a heavy "live aboard" load without
significant loss of performance. It's the kind of shape you want for
a proper coastal cruiser. All our hulls are built to Transport Canada
Rules and inspected and certified by Canada Steamship Inspection.
We have taken this hull the next step and introduced a pleasure
"pilot house" style boat. The top deck and cabin is a composite
sandwich core structure. This gives the best strength to weight
structure and excellent for heat insulation and noise damping.
The entire top deck was engineered to ABS standards. The boat is
equipped with the top of the line equipment and wired to ABYC
electrical standards. We incorporated state of the art material
and building techniques throughout.
The end result was an impressive 36 Nova Trawler. We are a progressive
boat yard. If you like how we think and the way we build boats,
please give us a call.
